Nokia has finally launched his Ovi Store!

Ovi Store by Nokia is now available globally to an estimated 50 million Nokia device owners across more than 50 Nokia devices, including the forthcoming flagship device, the Nokia N97.

Starting from today, on a first set of Nokia devices, you can start purchasing and downloading applications from the Ovi Store client on your device.

And, if you’re a developer, you can finally start to distribute your content to all Nokia users around the globe! :)

Gcal update: version 0.3.5 with manual timezone setting

After a while far from Gcal development (due to a lot of undercover work :) ) here is a new update for the Java ME Google Calendar client, specifically released to fix the different timezone issues that various users are reporting.

With version 0.3.5 it’s now possible to manually set the preferred timezone from the application Settings screen. To do so, you have 2 choices:

    • If you want to use the timezone sent by Google Calendar server, you can set to “Yes” the “Use server timezone?” option
    • If you want to explicitly set your timezone, then set the previous option to “No“, and then specify your timezone offset in the “Timezone” field

If you have problems with timezone in your GCal client, then you should definitely update. Just update from within GCal (“Options” -> “More..” -> “Check updates”), or download version 0.3.5 from here:

JAD file is also available for download here: Gcal JAD download.

Phone: Samsung SCH-R610. Version 0.3.3 used to work. Then it stopped working. When I try to enter my password the text window on the phone allows me to input my full password, but when I accept the password and the screen returns back to the gcal login screen it only shows the first 5 character of the password. Obviously google won’t allow me to log in without the full password. Upgraded to 0.3.5, but same problem.

      Hi all,

@Laura: month and week views are planned, and should be included in a future release. Cannot give precise timeplan about it :(

@morguena: thanks for your feedback, I’ll check your issue and let you know what I find. GCal works online. Browing events offline would be a nice functionality, but it is not currently implemented.

@Louis de Lange: unfortunately this is a known issue, but I currently have not a fix for it. I’m actually working on it, and hope to have good news asap :) The five ‘*’ are only for security purposes, to avoid displaying the exact length of the typed password.

@s t: unfortunately I have not that device to make tests, but I’ll check if I can find a fix for it.

@Nuno Gomes: which error do you get when downloading the JAD? Edit functionality is surely planned, hope to include it in a very next release!

      Hi Pit

I’ve just installed this version on my Nokia N97 (previously had an E90), and all day events are showing up in the following day’s events list, saying “To All Day” (which is a strange phrase in itself).

I’m pretty sure this didn’t used to happen on the previous version of GCal which was installed on my old phone.

Then I realised that Use server timezone was set to No with Timezone +01:00 by default (I think the default should be to use it, as it was in previous versions where you had no choice). Setting Use server timezone to Yes fixed the problem. Presumably with a manual offset of +1, gCal thought All Day finishes at 1:00am?

    • Marty 8:49 pm on October 27, 2009 Permalink

Love the GCal app but 0.3.5 doesn’t handle Eastern Time Zone “All-Day” events correctly.
I have an all day event for 10/30 and it shows on 10/29′s list of events. Doesn’t matter what settings I use it will not work correctly. I have it set to be -04:00 and the times show correctly on regular events but the AllDay event is wrong. My Google calendar is set for Eastern GMT-05:00 but if I change Gcal to that my times are off an hour.

Hi Pit, thanks for this GREAT app.

One question: when I add a new event to my calendar from the app, it does not create a reminder for the it on Google, even though this is set as default on the website. Any way to fix this, please.

      Many thanks,

      Heinz.

@Grigory: are you creating an event on your personal calendar, or on a shared one?

@Julie: not noticed yet, but I’ll try to reproduce your problem and see what could be the cause

@Marty: I’m working to fix this, will release an update as soon as it properly works

@menetekel: do you refer to mail/sms reminders? Actually, there’s no explicit support yet, but will be surely added in one of the next updates

Elros: thanks, should be fixed now :)

Is there a way to create repeating events in Gcal?

    • Brandon 11:14 pm on September 30, 2010 Permalink

This is still a great application that I use quite often.

The only glitch I have found so far is…
If Use server timezone = Yes, the correct timezone is used for the primary calendar, but additional calendars do not seem to use the server timezone, so events show at the incorrect time or as All Day.
If you set Use server timezone = No, and set the timezone manually, then all calendars show the correct time.

Please continue developing this app! :)

Hi I have a Sony C510 and I am able to enter my email address but, when I enter p/w, it does not pick up all the characters and thus, I cannot log in.

    • blackadder1st 1:56 pm on September 14, 2009 Permalink

Same as Byron. I have a 9 figure password but when I ‘OK’ it only shows 5 *s. When I click on Login, it sits at Logging In at the top right corner for ever, and doesn’t actually log in. I am using a CECT i9 3G phone on O2 network if it makes any difference.

The lack of calendar on the i9 phone is one of its major letdowns, so if I could just get GCal working and sync my calendar, I’d have my ‘iPhone’.

      Regards

    • pit 2:01 pm on September 14, 2009 Permalink

      Hi,

@blackadder1st and @byron: only 5 ‘*’ characters are displayed as a security practice, but all the password characters are correctly used when logging in. So, the login issue is probably related to something else.

Since I have not these devices, I have to get them to test GCal on, and spot out which are the issues.

      Will keep you updated :)

Gcal version 0.3.3: more fixes and S60 1st/2nd edition support

After some days away from Gcal, due to a lot of work going on in these days, here’s an update that will hopefully solve some of the issues related to accessing your calendar data, and various other bugs, including:

    • Wrong saving of “All day” events
    • Wrong time of events saved on device calendar
    • Various other unhandled Exceptions that were causing crashes of the application

In this release, a first support for previous Nokia Series60 editions (specifically: 1st and 2nd editions) has also been added, so you should now be able to use Gcal on your beloved Nokia 6600 :)

And, for those who still experience problems, more meaningful error messages have been set, so that it’ll be easier to spot out and solve the issues. So, when reporting a problem, please also add the exact error message you get in the related error popup. Thanks! :)

If your mobile phone also needs a JAD file, you can download it from here: download Gcal JAD.

      Hi

Thanks for the update. However, I don’t think I’ve ever successfully installed an update using gCal’s own Update option :-(

I have automatic checking turned off, but chose to manually check for updates when I saw the posting about the new version. It downloaded OK, asked if I wanted to update from version x to version y, asked if I wanted to save data, but failed at the final step, just saying “Failed to install!” (or words to that effect – sorry if I haven’t got the exact message).

After that, I could no longer run gCal.

I downloaded it manually from the link and tried to install manually. Identical problem.

The only way I could complete the update was to reboot my phone, and then manually download from the web link and install again.

      I have a Nokia E90, S60 3rd edition.

Thanks for adding the day name at the top of the screen – it’s a big improvement.

I was a bit surprised to find there’s no option to edit an appointment – but maybe I’m just missing something? I had an appointment that I realised I needed to change, so being unable to find an edit option, I thought I’d duplicate and then delete the original, but Options | Actions | Duplicate just sits there and does nothing (it doesn’t dismiss the dialog box or anything). All I can do is press Cancel. Select/OK do nothing.

Having had that problem, I’ve tried all the other options available from an appointment to see what happens for me:

Add comment works, and View comment works, but if I try to View a comment immediately after adding it (i.e. without exiting the event), it says No comments for this event.

      Send via SMS works.

Copy to Calendar prompts for calendars, but tells me “There was an reror while copying the event”.

Save locally asks “Allow application Gcal to write user data?” However, whatever I answer, I can “Error while saving even on local calendar” (This message makes sense if I allowed it to, but it couldn’t, but I shouldn’t see it if I say No to Allow application …
The event really DOESN’T get copied to my local calendar.

Delete prompts with an “Do you want to delete this event?”, but then say yes, I see a “Deleting” progress report in the top right hand corner, but then I get an error message “There was an error while trying to delete this event (409)” – and checking with the computer, the event hasn’t been deleted.

All of these tests were done on the same event without exiting the event at all.

NB: Exiting the event and selecting it again allowed my just-added comment to be seen.

Can’t see an About menu option to report a version number, but Check Updates says my version is up to date ;-).

Gcal 0.3.2: fix for GMT timezone issue

Small update for Gcal, that fixes some bugs reported by users, as:

    • “All day” wrongly shown for all events, for some particular timezones (e.g.: GMT)
    • Right softkey not working on popups on some specific Nokia devices

You can download the latest version from the download button here, or directly updating from inside Gcal itself.

      Thanks Pit.

I’m now correctly getting timed entries in gCal. Only showing the Calendars which had entries is great, but it does have one slight issue. If no calendars have entries, you just see a blank page. It would be helpful to have a message that says “No entries for today”, as otherwise you’re left wondering whether it’s finished (or even started) searching.

Also, it would useful to have the day name in the header for the page (e.g. Mon 23/02/09 instead of just 23/02/2009).

      Thanks
